Quotes on Genealogy

"The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us [as individuals] is to seek after our dead." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 1938, p.356)

"It is our duty to secure as complete genealogies as possible, to diescover our fathers and mothers back to the last generaation, to connect, if it may be possible, with Adam, our first father upon the earth-a duty which we cannot escape" Elder John A. Widtsoe

"the spirit and influence of your dead will guide those who are interested in finding those records. If there is amywhere on the earth anything concerning them, you will find it.' Melvin J. Ballard

And Elder Widtsoe said, "I have a feeling...that those who give themselves with all their might and main to this work receive help from the other side, and not merely in gathering genealogies. Whoever seeks to help those on the other side receives help in return in all the affairs of life."

"Brethren, the great priesthood leaders of past dispensations look to us to move this work. All righteous men and women who ever lived look to us! We are their only hope for salvation. We hold the key to their prison doors. We must set them free! How can we any longer ignore their right to salvation? President Brigham Young said, "When I think upon this subject, I want the tongues of seven thunders to wake up the people."

"When you sisters come here to the temple as workers, you are doing what you were foreordained to do. I am sure you were foreordained to work in this Temple. You are part of a "handful" of sisters to receive the authority under the hand of the Priesthood to Wash, Anoint, and Clothe your sisters. You were foreordained to this part and received this authority in the pre-existence...only a handful of sisters chosen from all of Father's daughters have been given this privilege and responsibility...your sins are forgiven you each day as you come to serve...your happiness comes as you serve so it is immediate."

President Brinton McConkie of the Salt Lake Temple Presidency presented this to all supervisors in the Temple-Fall of 1989
